Nanaimo Daily News’s Derek Spalding nominated for national award

March 22, 2011

Nanaimo Daily News reporter Derek Spalding is nominated for a National Newspaper Award for local reporter “for getting behind the secrecy over a deadly C-difficile outbreak at a local hospital.”

Derek’s the only community journalist nominated for a national award but he’s not the only one from a small daily. Here’s a full list of finalists.

I would suggest that Canadian and BCY community newspaper awards take a couple hints from the National awards and add categories for beat reporting and short features. If that would make things too crowded, I’d suggest that they replace the best holiday/special edition lame-o awards.
